Even if you consider yourself to be a natural performer, you could probably benefit from taking online singing lessons to enhance your sound. Your online instructor will give you the encouragement you need to stretch as a performer. He or she will also provide you with the technical expertise necessary to enhance your skills as a singer. Once you’ve completed an online course, you may be surprised at the versatility you’ve gained, both as a singer and as a performer.
One of the challenges you’ll face as a performer is learning to “sing to music.” But what exactly does that mean? Doesn’t everyone who attempts to carry a tune “sing to music”? The answer is, not necessarily.
Many aspiring singers sing acapella, for the most part. They believe in the strength of their own voice and their ability to stay on pitch. If they play the guitar, they may accompany themselves from time to time but, primarily, they are singing without the benefit of music.
Therefore, learning to sing to music can be difficult at first. If you are not accustomed to accompaniment, you may find it challenging to follow the lead of a band. You may feel as if you’re no longer in control as a singer—that the musicians are now dictating your sound. And you may not be happy about it.
But the fact of the matter is that you can’t really progress as a musical artist unless you are willing to sing to music. As beautiful as your voice may be, chances are it will sound better with a piano, guitar, or orchestra accompanying it. When was the last time you bought a CD that exclusively featured acapella music? Unless you are a fan of Gregorian Chant, it’s likely that you don’t have many CDs in your collection that don’t feature some kind of instrumentation.
Perhaps the key to singing correctly to music is to carefully listen, both to the pitch and to the beat. If you aren’t listening…if you’re not paying attention to what the musicians are doing…you are likely to be disappointed in your overall performance.
It is also imperative that you learn to relax when singing with a band. Any tension in your body is likely to have a negative effect on your vocal tone. It will also make it more difficult for you to breathe, causing you hardship when you attempt the high notes. Tension is to the vocal chords what muscle strain is to the body—it is a detriment to your overall performance.
Granted, singing to music may be highly difficult at first. However, with practice and dedication, you will grow more comfortable with the concept and more comfortable as a singer. If you don’t have the opportunity to sing with a band or pianist at the moment, and you don’t play the guitar or the piano yourself, you might consider “warming up” to singing with music by singing karaoke. But be aware of the fact that there are a number of initial challenges you’ll face when it comes to singing karaoke the way it was meant to be sung.
